Kindergarten Career Day And Community Unit

The Kindergarten classes will be learning about different jobs in the community.  The focus is to see how everyone needs to work together to make a family and community work smoothly.

On May 2nd your child can dress up as a person with a career they might like to have when they grow up.  Other years we have had doctors, teachers, firemen, scientists, actresses, writers, nurses and more!  We will talk about how each person/job helps the community.  We will also take and print a picture and write about it in a book for each class.

Students can come to school already dressed as their career choice.  Every year it has been a great success!

The following week we will be taking a walkMs. Tacke’s class will go on Wednesday, May 8th.
ing trip to Coborns to see how the grocery store operates and contributes to the needs of our community.  We will look at different jobs to be done to make the store run smoothly.

A group of children working on our 'bank'
We are also building community activity centers for children to play/work at the next week!  If you have any special tools that might help, we would love to borrow them from May 6th – 10th!  These are the centers we are making (both classes helped pick ideas):

Café
Bank
Fire/Police
House
Post Office
Dr.’s Office
Book Store/Coffee Shop

Earth Day

Today is officially Earth Day - when we all take the time to celebrate our earth and think about ways we can reduce our impact as we live on it.

We talked about recycling today and did a science lesson about all the types of things that can be recycled through our local programs.  The class brainstormed an excellent list and copied it into their notebooks along with a recycling symbol.

We also talked about endangered animals, protecting habitat, and how trees (a big focus in Kindergarten) are important for fresh air and more.

Don't be surprised if your child comes home and checks on the recycling that happens at your house!

A great big THANK YOU to all the parents who were able to go along today.  The small groups of children helped make this day a huge success!

Random Pictures

Remember when they used to look like this?  Boy, have they grown up!

LOVE to see construction going on with the blocks!

Andrew wrote his first story all by himself!  Now when children have written a story with words, they may get to go and share it with others in the school using the "Writer's Pass".  Since we started using the pass, there are suddenly more words to go with the stories!

MONEY!

Our new math unit is about money.

So far we have had lessons about the

penny and the nickel.

A new and challenging term for the children is "value".  As in:  "What is the value of a nickel?" or "What is the value of a nickel and four pennies?"

This would be a great time to get out some coins and practice, practice, practice!

The dime and quarter will be added to the list soon!
