Math

Our current math topic is the calendar.

A May calendar came home with your child yesterday.  On there we have highlighted important dates such as Career Day (yesterday), our walk/tour of the grocery store next Wednesday (May 8th), and our Expo Night on the 23rd.  If you can check their calendars and add the dates to your family calendar or help them add important dates to their May calendar, all the better!

In this topic we are reviewing days of the week, months of the year, and filling in numbers on a calendar.  We are also talking about seasons and thermometers.  If you have a chance to point out to your child the temperature of each day, especially with this crazy weather, it will reinforce what we are doing at school.

Now lets hope some more spring weather shows up soon!

Career Day!

Our Career Day for both Kindergarten classrooms was a huge success today!  This is always a highlight for everyone in the whole school.  We had a career parade around to each of the classrooms and offices in the Discovery Building!

Mrs. B's Class:  Software Engineer, Dancer, Athletes, a Dad, Doctor, Engineer, Cook, Nurse, Art Teacher, Race car Driver, Emergency Room Dr., Veterinarian, Construction Worker, Police/First Responders

Ms. Tacke's Class:  Teachers, Singer, Firefighters, Surgeon, Doctors, Bankers, Artist, Cheerleader, Dancers, Spy, Army Private, Construction Worker, Target Manager, Athletes.

We talked about jobs in the community, wrote about how different jobs help keep a community running, how we use math and reading in each job, and more!  We also went on a parade through the different school classrooms to show them our community job ideas!

Kindergarten Career Day And Community Unit

The Kindergarten classes will be learning about different jobs in the community.  The focus is to see how everyone needs to work together to make a family and community work smoothly.

On May 2^nd your child can dress up as a person with a career they might like to have when they grow up.  Other years we have had doctors, teachers, firemen, scientists, actresses, writers, nurses and more!  We will talk about how each person/job helps the community.  We will also take and print a picture and write about it in a book for each class.

Students can come to school already dressed as their career choice.  Every year it has been a great success!

ing trip to Coborns to see how the grocery store operates and contributes to the needs of our community.  We will look at different jobs to be done to make the store run smoothly.

We are also building community activity centers for children to play/work at the next week!  If you have any special tools that might help, we would love to borrow them from May 6th – 10th!  These are the centers we are making (both classes helped pick ideas):

Earth Day

Today is officially Earth Day - when we all take the time to celebrate our earth and think about ways we can reduce our impact as we live on it.

We talked about recycling today and did a science lesson about all the types of things that can be recycled through our local programs.  The class brainstormed an excellent list and copied it into their notebooks along with a recycling symbol.

We also talked about endangered animals, protecting habitat, and how trees (a big focus in Kindergarten) are important for fresh air and more.

Don't be surprised if your child comes home and checks on the recycling that happens at your house!
